CIDER HALLS

I´m going to talk about one of the most traditions which attracts people from all over the world.

In the Basque Country the cider halls season starts around the 10th of January until the end of April. September is the time for harvesting apples and after that, people used to stores it in order to make the best cider ever.

Even if the cider halls seasons is a limited period, you can get a cider bottle during the whole year wherever you want. It´s a good reason to meet once again with your group of friends or whole family around an extraordinary meal and refreshing drink which name is cider.

It´s made with fermented apple juice but its brand has its own characteristic flavour.

When people go to the cider halls they usually do “TXOTX!” which is just the action to open the place where the cider remains (It´s like a cask for the cider instead of being for the wine) and to let the cider comes out with the aim to people could be able to bring the glass closer and to serve oneself.

However, it´s a cultural code for the Basque people to attend to some different cider halls every year. It´s a tradition, it´s a way to socialise and the most important thing… it´s a way to have FUN!
If someday you come to the Basque Country, you have to try it out! It´s a MUST!!!!!!
Usually, there is a large and great choice of the menu but the common one consists in:

1.      Cod omelette

2.      Fried cod with peppers

3.      A huge piece of beef

4.      Cheese with quince jelly and walnuts

This menu could cost around 30€.

After drinking some cider people could be pretty crazy and they sometimes try out to break walnuts with their head! It´s so funny!
